“10 years ago, director Wong Kar Wai’s short movie ‘wkw/tk/1996@7’55”hk.net’ was screened together with his hit film, ‘Fallen Angels.’ The very idea of Wong Kar Wai directing a promotional film for Takeo Kikuchi and the fresh surprises it provided found receptive audiences, and the combination of Asano’s performance as a ‘Japanese yakuza in another country’ spraying machine-gun bullets from a bed and Takeo Kikuchi’s cool image left an indelible impression on the minds of many. Since then Asano has featured in Takeo Kikuchi campaigns across numerous seasons and their close relationship, which has included supply for costumes for his film ‘Shark Skin Man and Peach Hip Girl’ as well as tuxedos for wearing at the Cannes Film Festival, has subsequently remained unchanged despite creative director Kikuchi Takeo making way for Nobukuni Taishi in 2004. In Asano’s new film ‘Invisible Waves’ his protagonist Kyoji also dresses in Takeo Kikuchi…”

When I was 18, I got into a huge row with my manager. I told him I really hated being an actor, and that I wanted to give it up. At the time I was bawling my eyes out and wondered if I’d gone a bit nutty, But just then, my grandmother who was living with us at the time said to me ‘Ta-kun, whatever you do, you can always find something to like about it.’ She’d always been there to help me since I was little, and she passed away last year, but her words truly saved me that day. I was happy that I had someone who understood me, and I think that somehow telling me to ‘hang in there’ was her way of scolding me. ‘You just make all these excuses and don’t do what you want to do,’ that kind of thing. That’s how I interpreted her words, and that’s why I was able to stick with being an actor.
